When the pressure in your gas cylinder drops, you need to refill or exchange it to continue welding. Argon gas refilling applies to TIG and aluminium MIG welders, while argon CO₂ refilling is intended for steel MIG-MAG. The right gas, at the right time, prevents stoppages in the middle of work.
Two supply options exist. Argon cylinder refilling consists of having your own cylinder filled by a professional. Standard exchange means returning your empty cylinder for a full one: faster, but you get a different cylinder back. Both solutions are suitable for contract-free cylinders that you own outright.
With a contract-free cylinder, welding gas refilling is unrestricted: no annual fee, no obligation to use a single supplier. You refill or exchange whenever you want, wherever it is convenient. Over time, this is often more economical than classic rental, especially for regular use.
Monitoring the pressure gauge on your regulator allows you to anticipate the refill. A residual pressure that is too low means there is little gas left: it is better to plan the replacement before running dry in the middle of a job. For regular use, having a second reserve cylinder is a valuable safety measure.
Choose the refill according to your process: pure argon for TIG and aluminium MIG, argon-CO₂ mixture for steel MIG-MAG, oxygen and acetylene for flame welding. Check the compatibility between the gas, your regulator, and your cylinder.
The contract-free cylinder is the natural complement to gas refilling. You buy the cylinder once, then only pay for the gas with each welding gas refill.
